Having loved Cara Bastone's debut novel, Just A Heartbeat Away, one of my favorite romance novels of 2020, I was excited to pick up the next book in the companion series. Can't Help Falling was just as brilliant as the first book and I can candidly say that Cara Bastone is up there for me in my list of favorite authors.

We saw the relationship between Serafine and Tyler bud in the first book, but it's not necessary for you to read that book before you pick Can't Help Falling. I was eager to read this love story because the chemistry between the two was so palpable in that first book. Cara Bastone writes realistic slow-burn romances that work in every way for me. When Serafine brutally rejects Tyler's proposal to go out on a date, he is crushed because her words to him at that moment were biting. Though they were hurtful comments, it also gives him the nudge to reevaluate his life. The real test for Tyler comes along when he is saddled with the guardianship of his teenage sister. He obviously knows nothing about raising a teenager, especially because he has no interest in children and has lived a bachelor's lifestyle for so wrong, so it serves as an obstacle but also a learning experience for him. Tyler's growth in Can't Help Falling is a work of art. He has always had good qualities, but his interactions with his grumpy and hurt sibling, Kylie, push him to become more responsible and the best version of himself. I thought Cara Bastone handled his character arc beautifully.

Serafine provides a nice balance to Tyler's personality. She is much more of a free-spirit compared to him - she's a psychic, after all. Growing up as a foster child allows her to connect on a deeper level with Tyler's sister. She understands her pain and anger and becomes a rock for Kylie. This obviously forces Tyler and Serafine back into each other's circles, forcing them to interact and forge a friendship that turns into much more. Serafine has a kind and forgiving soul. I found her to be very endearing and I appreciated that she took the time to apologize to Tyler for her harsh words earlier in their relationship. Serafine has her own trust and abandonment issues that she has to work on in the book and Tyler helps her in that area.

As I mentioned, their relationship is a slow-burn one, but there is so much chemistry between the two. Their connection is undeniable and having to be patient waiting for them to give in to their attraction for each other made their relationship much more swoon-worthy in my eyes. Having to wait made sense given that these two characters had to work on themselves before they could enter a romantic relationship. I loved all that anticipation and Cara Bastone delivers with some heart-aching sensual scenes. I love that Cara Bastone explores so many different relationship dynamics in her books. It makes her stories feel so deeply emotional. There is also a found-family aspect of this series that I adore. The hero and heroine of the first book continue to play a vital role in Tyler and Serafine's lives. It's a lovely friend-group and if you care about relationships outside of the romantic ones in books, you'll love it too.

Can't Help Falling is a truly special romance novel. Tyler and Serafine's story settled in my heart and I'm so eager to re-read their book. I hope you'll give their love story a try. Don't sleep on this author's magnificent debut series, friends.
