How does one even review the 5th book of a series without coming across as repetitive? Emerald Blaze is an Ilona Andrews book - will that do for a review? No? Blergh! The Hidden Legacy series is at the top of my all-time favorites list. It's one of those series that I will drop everything and anything for if I am able to snag an early copy and that's exactly what I did when Emerald Blaze landed on my Kindle. As always, Ilona Andrews delivered with a wildly entertaining and ridiculously humorous installment. I'm obsessed.

It's not a secret that I'm not always the most plot-driven reader. I'm more of a character-driven kinda gal and I often find that a lot of urban fantasy novels tend to focus more on the plot and world-building. I never have to worry about that with Ilona Andrews because they are the rare duo of authors who pay equal attention to their characters. I was so impressed with how much Catalina has grown and evolved from the original trilogy. In my review for Sapphire Flames, I mentioned how it was hard for me to separate my love for Nevada from this spin-off. I fully admit that was a disservice on my part towards Catalina. Those feelings had nothing to do with how the authors portrayed these characters, but it was more a reflection of my complete attachment to Nevada and my inability to break that attachment. That shifted for me while reading Emerald Blaze. I continued to be amazed at what a kick-ass queen Catalina but this time around, my awe for her was almost 10 folds more. I've grown to appreciate how she has matured from a shy girl to a young woman who is still reserved and introspective, yet completely courageous in her own way.

Emerald Blaze also delivered on the Alessandro content for me. I was desperate to learn more about his background in Sapphire Flames, but Ilona Andrews tortured me by not featuring him enough (in my opinion). I was thrilled that he was a much more prominent figure in Emerald Blaze. I'm solidly a Mad Rogan fangirl and I'm not going to stray from my fictional man, but I'll tell you, I came extremely close in this book. Alessandro was all smooth and sexy and how could I not want to drown in the depth of his eyes when he was making all sorts of googly pining faces at Catalina. The man was whipped and those of you who are fans of this couple are going to relish the romantic goodness that Ilona Andrews gifts readers. What is it about crime and evil-fighting couples that just works for me? I don't know, but I want more of this specific duo!

I'm not going to go too much into the details of the plot because it veers too much into spoiler territory. I will tell you that the book was darker and much more dangerous than some of the previous installments. Ilona Andrews are pros at keeping readers on their toes and with Emerald Blaze, I felt like I was constantly at the edge of my seat. Lots of great revelations were made, more secrets unraveled, and more questions arose that I desperately need answers to. Also, THAT ENDING! GAHHHHHHHHHH!!! Extremely rude of Ilona and Gordon to just end the book there! As a side note, the Baylors remain the most entertaining fictional family that I've ever read and I'm just loving watching all these characters grow up and find their own footing. Fingers crossed we'll get an Arabella-centered series because she is my favorite sassy Baylor sister.

If you haven't read the Hidden Legacy series, I refuse to be friends with you! Just kidding! In all seriousness, if you're into kick-ass heroines, swoony romances, and lots and lots of action, I promise that this series will be your new favorite!

P.S Though Sapphire Flames and Emerald Blaze are considered spin-offs of the original trilogy, I don't recommend reading them out of order.
