I've been sitting on this review since May. I wasn't quite sure how to put my thoughts into words. I am a big fan of this series. There's so much going on with these books and the characters are some of my all-time favorites. This fourth installment, and first full-length spinoff story featuring Catalina, was an equally fun addition to this excellent series.

I'm not going to lie, though I was very excited to have a Catalina-centric story, I was also a little bit nervous. I had nothing to worry about, however, as Catalina, while different from her sister, Nevada, was equally compelling. We see more of Catalina's leadership skills in Sapphire Flames as she takes over as the lead investigator of the Baylor Agency. Though she sometimes has moments where she has moments of self-doubt and vulnerability, she rose up to every obstacle with her head held up high. Catalina was a typical Ilona Andrews' heroine in that she was endearing and easy to root for. Her magical abilities have always been intriguing to me, and we still don't have the full picture of them, I'm excited to learn more in the subsequent books. In Sapphire Flames, she takes up a friend's case, that puts her in the path of danger and Alessandro, a powerful Italian Prime, and Catalina's teenage crush. I was so looking forward to getting to know Alessandro and watch him interact with Catalina. These two have some history and the way they danced around each other was a damn delight! I will admit that I was hoping for just a bit more on Alessandro's background, but I have a feeling Ilona Andrews are keeping that for the next books in the series.

The Baylors continue to charm me to no end with how much personality they all have. I laughed so hard at so many of their scenes. Nevada pulling Catalina's leg with that framed Alessandro picture, anyone? I cracked up hard! If you love close-knit families, who make fun of each other but are also fiercely protective of each other, you must meet the Baylors. I just have such a soft-spot for all of them and I would literally read scene after scene of them doing nothing. As with the other books in the Hidden Legacies series, Sapphire Flames has a solid mystery. I love how into the plots I get. There are never any dull moments and they are usually full of twists and turns.

All that being said, I will say that while I loved Sapphire Flames, I didn't love it as much as I loved Nevada and Mad Rogan's books. I am just so attached to those two, so I think this book had a lot to live up to. It's very much of an excellent book though! Waiting for the next book will be torture, but I am ready for whatever Ilona Andrews has in store for us.
