Tessa Dare and her books always deliver on stories that leave me in a warm and fuzzy cocoon. It's no wonder that she is one of my favorite authors with how much she makes me laugh and swoon. You can't ask for more from a book. The Wallflower Wager is another success for this talented author. I loved every minute it and I've already re-read it twice.

Penny and her horde of neglected animals stole my heart from the very first page. She was a very selfless and loving young lady who found comfort and companionship in her animals. She loved deeply and was one of those characters who was attracted to broken souls so that she could help heal them. Penny has led a relatively sheltered life but she has been mostly content with it. I loved that she had such a positive and optimistic view on life even though she had been hurt by loved ones in the past. Her pure sense of hope and desire for independence will appeal to many readers. I am probably making Lady Penelope sound like she is only this soft and quiet heroine, but the girl had some very sassy moments.

Moments that emerge around her grumpy new neighbor, Gabriel. His beastly personality appealed to the part of Penny that couldn't shy away from helping others. What a pair they made! Gabriel was another fun hero from Tessa Dare. He was one irritable and boorish fellow in the beginning, which obviously meant I was a complete goner for him. His story is one of rags-to-riches. Despite his immense wealth and business acumen, he doesn't feel comfortable in high society. His new job has set him up in the property next door to Penny's where he is forced to help her re-home her animals so she can stay put in her home and not be shipped off to her brother. Gabriel may have acted all indifferent in the beginning, but underneath that rough exterior was a complete teddy bear who was passionate and just as caring as Penny. A certain scene with a baby goat just about melted me and my cold heart!

As a result of working together, their forced proximity pushes them to get to know each other. The romance in this book is just so satisfying in every way. There was a ton of chemistry between the two, but it was the back and forth banter and bickering that got me. These two were like a lock and key with how perfectly well they clicked together. Of course, Gabriel tries his best to resist Penny's charms, but he doesn't last very long. I adored the progression of their romance and phew, is it just me or have Tessa Dare's books become progressively hotter? Besides the heavenly romance, the book has so many great scenes. The secondary characters and animals were a blast bringing even more humor and charm to this story. Penny's foul-mouthed parrot was especially a gem! I also can't forget Ash and Chase who at point had me laughing so hard, I was in tears. And of course, as always, Penny's friends were a delight.

The Wallflower Wager has to be one of the loveliest books I've read this year. It ticked all the boxes of what makes an enjoyable and romantic historical romance novel. I always finish off a book from Tessa Dare eager for more and boy am I eager for The Bride Bet next!
