Goals I'm Setting For Myself In 2019

Happy 2019, friends!

There is just something about the New Year that gets us excited and all ambitious, isn't there? I just love the feeling that I can achieve anything if I set goals for myself. I'm not always good at reaching all my goals, but they remain at the back of my head and I try to make a conscious effort towards them throughout the year. In 2019, my word is "simplicity". I am trying to keep every area of my life as simple and fulfilling as possible. In today's post, in honor of the new year, I thought I would share with you some goals, blogging and personal, that I am setting up for myself. There is no guarantee that I will achieve half of what I want, but I am going to try.

DON'T DWELL ON THE NEGATIVE

I'm a bit of a pessimist at heart and I tend to focus a lot on what could go wrong whenever I am faced with any decision. This year, I am going to try to kick the negative thoughts to the curb as much as I can. I will face whatever life has in store for me with as much positivity as I can manage.

BE KINDER

I know, I know. This shouldn't have to be something that I need to consciously try, but people have a way of irritating me. I know a lot of it has to do with me dwelling on the negative. I could do with being nicer and more appreciative of the people I encounter in my life, especially because I can be quite mean and snappy.

FIND A CHARITY TO DONATE TO REGULARLY

I don't earn anywhere near enough to donate hundreds of dollars to charities, unfortunately (That grad student stipend THOUGH), but I can donate a few dollars every few months now that I am actually earning my own money. My goal is to research and find a charity that I care about, probably something outside of the US. If you have suggestions, let me know.

BUDGET & SAVE

Another money-related goal! I have been reading a lot about budgeting and I think it would be really helpful for me. My parents have always been big on saving money for the future and I want to start early. I'm not somebody who spends a lot of money on things beyond the necessities, so I don't think this should be too much of an issue for me, but budgeting and keeping track of everything will help me keep in line.

CONTINUE TO FOSTER RELATIONSHIPS

I have a confession to make. I am very bad at friendships and relationships because I have a hard time keeping in touch with people. I've lost all of my childhood/HS friends because of my inability to communicate. I regret that very deeply, especially as I realize how difficult it is to make friends as we grow older. I have however made so many wonderful online friends and this year will be the year I continue to work on strengthening my friendships with them.

FIND A NEW HOBBY OUTSIDE OF READING

I have no hobbies outside of reading and blogging and I desperately want to find something else so my life is a bit more balanced. Right now, I am thinking that knitting might be a good option!

DON'T PRESSURE MYSELF TO READ X BOOKS A WEEK

I like to set reading goals every year/month/week, but 2018 was very stressful in terms of reading and blogging. I don't want that burn-out I experienced to happen again so this year I set my Goodreads challenge to 12 books. No more comparing myself to others. No more forcing myself to read books. 2019 will be the most relaxed blogging/reading year for me because that's how I'm setting it up to be.

READ MORE DIVERSELY

I made more of an effort in 2018 to read books from non-white authors. This year, I want to continue with that and try to read even more books from authors of color. I don't think it's going to be very hard though there are some fantastic-sounding diverse books releasing this year, especially in romance!

START READING CRIME FICTION AGAIN

Before I discovered YA fiction and romance, I was a devourer of all things crime fiction. In 2018, I re-discovered my love for crime books again thanks to Sherry Thomas' Lady Sherlock series. In 2019, I intend to continue with this streak and catch up on all the books I have missed out on over the years.

INTRODUCE "WHAT'S NICK BEEN COOKING?"

I get bored of writing reviews all the time and this year, I want to make more of an effort to write some non-bookish posts. Lately, I have been cooking and trying out tons of recipes. I'm thinking of introducing a series of posts where I share what I have been cooking. I know it's not book-related, but hopefully, some of you will be interested in them?

What are some of your goals/resolutions for the year?
